On PureViewClub.com - The coral reefs of Hilversum - semalt

I've been here before, De Rifwachter in Hilversum has a astonishing collection of colorful fish and coral polyps. The first time I was there is quite some time ago: I visited the place to make shots with my Nokia 808 PureView I only had for a few weeks. In Finding Nemo and Friends you'll find the whole story -- please don't forget to check it if you didn't do so already, I think it's worth you time (http://pureviewclub.com/2012/2457)Also, that post is way more "on topic" than this one in fact, because I will be showing a test with the Sony Xperia Z here. Why? Because I'm interested in new cameraphones in general, and I love to compare them with the ones offering PureView technology. And because I think the next PureView Lumia flagship should be waterproof too -- like the Sony Xperia Z is. Now I've read Nokia is in fact working on a waterproof new device already with a "nano-coated 2PI coating". You'll find that story on GSMarena, where they found the story on the Russian MobilTelefon. To be complete here is MyNokiaBlog's comment on that story. So there is hope already! :-)Sony has "waterproof " as a unique selling point since the previous Xperia V and I think it's extremely practicle. Not only when you accidently drop it in a glass of beer (or worse), or when you're calling outside and it starts to rain. Also, you can make underwater recordings with it -- without any protective case that is -- and that's what I did today: not from behind the glass this time, but in the water itself. If I would have lived in a region with coral reefs, I would have gladly made these recordings there. But this is second best I think: it gives you a good impression of what the Sony Xperia Z is capable of, and I'm happy to share it here also maybe to inspire Nokia to really think of adding this to their next flagship PureView Lumia. It never hurts to ask, right? :-)One last thing: you'll see recordings of three basins filled with salt water. After recording I cleaned my phone with clear tap water for about five minutes. You should do so too when you try anything like this in salt water, because the device may be waterproof, salt water will probably damage it if you don't.Here we go. Don't forget to choose fullHD (1080p) if your connection is fast enough. And as I like to say: enjoy! I hope Nokia is watching this as well. -

The Amazing World of Coral Reefs Fluorescence - semalt

The ongoing study is part of a growing interest in coral fluorescence among the scientific community. Coral Fluorescence was recently found to be a strong indicator of coral health, and coral fluorescence can even be used to determine when coral larvae are ready to settle. The footage was captured using a super macro camera to study the biology of corals in question and microscopic fauna living among this mysterious ecosystem. Coral Guardian focus its research on coral reefs, marine ecosystems that protect coastlines, support tourism and provide nutrition to many island nations. The global deterioration in the quality of these ecosystems has been widely reported over the last 40 years, reflecting the complex interaction between climate change stressors (thermal anomalies, ocean acidification and storms) and chronic or acute local impacts (coastal development, pollution and over-fishing). But, some corals survive, and even thrive in the same conditions that rapidly kill others. Coral Guardian seeks to better understand the biological underpinnings of this variability by defining traits that associate with environmental sensitivity and resistance in corals, and with the resilience of reefs. Our goal in conducting this research is to contribute basic and applied scientific knowledge that expands understanding of how coral reefs function, and informs the management and conservation of these beautiful but threatened ecosystems.www.coralguardian.org -

Dec 26th Tsunami Reefs, Remembrance & Renewals - 2004 - semalt

From http://www.AGuaPictures.com - This video is a unique and exclusive video documentary of 3-4 months of underwater ocean cleanup efforts after the 2004 Tsunami, in the Andaman Seas in Thailand. It highlights the problems & damages caused by the Tsunami to the effected shorelines and underwater in 2004 in the Andaman Seas, as well as the restoration efforts from over 500 volunteer divers from January until April 2005 to restore these areas. It shows the damages underwater, coral damage to the reefs, garbage from land engulfed into the oceans by the Tsunami, the efforts by volunteers to restore the latter & efforts by the Thai government to encourage & promote the rehabilitation of these reefs by implanting nurseried giant clams, an endangered species in the Earth's oceans.--------------------------------One day, one quake, hundreds of thousands killed, and an uncountable amount of damage incurred, on land and underwater. But what was unstoppable proved likewise for the spirits of 500 plus Thai volunteer divers recruited by the Thai Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). Thai seas were hit seriously after the Tsunami of 2004, but within a couple weeks of the December 26th date, Government and volunteers had already assembled together for cleanups throughout the Andaman Seas. Right after work on a Friday and trying to sleep on an overnight bus ride from Bangkok to the Andaman Sea was just the start. On arrival early Saturday morning, 80 plus divers would roll out onto a pier to dive as many times as the compressors could fill the tanks over the weekend, only to board the bus Sunday evening to arrive back in time for a shower at home and then to start work again in Bangkok on a Monday morning. For many of these divers, this was their weekend routine for 3-4 weekends a month...for 4 consecutive months. Tiring to say the least, but the spirits of the divers was nothing more than enthusiastic and energetic every weekend. Over the 4 months of cleanup, each weekend covered a location from as far north as the Burma border to the southern reaches of Trang, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. In the end, the amount of land debris collected just after the Tsunami totaled over 24,000 tonnes. Towards the end of the Tsunami cleanup project that was carried out by the Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), the last phase was to have the volunteer divers transplant over 2000 nurseried Giant Clams, an endangered species, back onto the reefs to promote the rejuvenation of the reef system. Giant Clams prevent the occurrence of fish toxins and influence the reef in other positive ways. They are also considered indicators of reef health. Since that time, this department has released over 1000 Giant Clams every year all throughout Thai waters with the continual help of regular volunteer divers. Three years now after the Tsunami, the damages to the coral reefs have fully recovered with the help of all the volunteers who united in efforts, spirits and comradery. And with the support of regular divers like you the reader and continual monitoring and cleaning of our oceans, Thailand's coral reefs remain one of the country's prized natural wonders. -----------------Project figures released by DMCR Director Mr. Niphon Phongsuwan. For more reports of cleanup activities in Thailand http://aguapictures.com/Gallery/THAIL... and knowledge on maintaining coral reefs please visit the website: http://www.greenfins-thailand.org -

Molokai 2018 - The Dreaded Reefs at Portlock - semalt

A look at the reefs around the point at Portlock and the end of the China Wall, coming towards the China Wall. Knowing the right way to go can make a huge difference, as many have found out. After about 50 km of paddling crossing the Kaiwi Channel it can be heartbreaking to lost time or break your ski and not finished with the end in sight - as Cory Hill found out in 2016 whilst leading. There's the conservative rroute going wide and avoiding all reefs or a slight short cut by turning sharp right at the point (coming into the bay), catching a wave along the cliff face, then getting off the wave at the right spot and heading hard left in the channel between the top and middle reefs, and then out into the main channel. But, you have to know where you are going, and if the surf is solid, it can be very perilous, as I found out in the Makapu'u Dash last Sunday :-) So, if in doubt, play it safe and go wide, as the short cut won't save you much time, and could easily cost you a lot of time, or be race over - maybe ski over. An editors note to ask you to pardon me for my dyslexic moment mixing up my left and rights. I'll blame the American traffic for confusing me by driving on the wrong side of the road. And having electrical switches and taps all in reverse. Very strange.. -

Sea slugs, octopi, coral, feathered starfish, shellfish, box fish, king snapper, butterfly cod, sea anemones, hermit crabs, sea turtles." Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral_reefCoral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems held together by calcium carbonate structures secreted by corals. Coral reefs are built by colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups. The polyps belong to a group of animals known as Cnidaria, which also includes sea anemones and jellyfish. Unlike sea anemones, corals secrete hard carbonate exoskeletons which support and protect the coral polyps. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters.Often called "rainforests of the sea", coral reefs form some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. They occupy less than 0.1% of the world's ocean surface, about half the area of France, yet they provide a home for 25% of all marine species, including fish, mollusks, worms, crustaceans, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates and other cnidarians. Paradoxically, coral reefs flourish even though they are surrounded by ocean waters that provide few nutrients. They are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, but deep water and cold water corals also exist on smaller scales in other areas.Coral reefs deliver ecosystem services to tourism, fisheries and shoreline protection. The annual global economic value of coral reefs is estimated between US$29.8-375 billion. However, coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, partly because they are very sensitive to water temperature. They are under threat from climate change, oceanic acidification, blast fishing, cyanide fishing for aquarium fish, sunscreen use, overuse of reef resources, and harmful land-use practices, including urban and agricultural runoff and water pollution, which can harm reefs by encouraging excess algal growth...FormationMost of the coral reefs we can see today were formed after the last glacial period when melting ice caused the sea level to rise and flood the continental shelves. This means that most modern coral reefs are less than 10,000 years old. As communities established themselves on the shelves, the reefs grew upwards, pacing rising sea levels. Reefs that rose too slowly could become drowned reefs. They are covered by so much water that there was insufficient light. Coral reefs are found in the deep sea away from continental shelves, around oceanic islands and as atolls. The vast majority of these islands are volcanic in origin. The few exceptions have tectonic origins where plate movements have lifted the deep ocean floor on the surface...The approximately 20,000 year old Great Barrier Reef offers an example of how coral reefs formed on continental shelves. Sea level was then 120 m (390 ft) lower than in the 21st century. As sea level rose, the water and the corals encroached on what had been hills of the Australian coastal plain. By 13,000 years ago, sea level had risen to 60 m (200 ft) lower than at present, and many hills of the coastal plains had become continental islands. As the sea level rise continued, water topped most of the continental islands. The corals could then overgrow the hills, forming the present cays and reefs...Healthy tropical coral reefs grow horizontally from 1 to 3 cm (0.39 to 1.2 in) per year, and grow vertically anywhere from 1 to 25 cm (0.39 to 9.8 in) per year; however, they grow only at depths shallower than 150 m (490 ft) because of their need for sunlight, and cannot grow above sea level.MaterialsAs the name implies, the bulk of coral reefs is made up of coral skeletons from mostly intact coral colonies... shell fragments and the remains of calcareous algae such as the green-segmented genus Halimeda can add to the reef's ability to withstand damage from storms and other threats. Such mixtures are visible in structures such as Eniwetok Atoll... -

Considering the robotic arm is large and heavy enough to lift car doors easily, we’d like to invite you all to give this tattoo artist a try first, please.A team from Mote Marine Laboratory found that when you break coral down into microfragments it will regrow at 25 to 40 times the normal rate, which may help revitalize reefs in decayed areas. Considering only jellyfish are thriving in this era of global climate change, we’ll take the coral news as a win.And finally some Zurich engineers crafted a bed that can rock people to sleep. Artificial Reefs | JONATHAN BIRD'S BLUE WORLD - semalt

In the Florida Keys, several ships have been sunk intentionally as artificial reefs to provide habitat for fish and entertainment for scuba divers. Jonathan visits three wrecks of different ages to see how these wrecks turn into reefs and what it means to the local marine life.**********************************************************************If you like Jonathan Bird's Blue World, don't forget to subscribe! You can buy some Blue World T-shirts & Swag!http://www.blueworldtv.com/shopYou can join us on Facebook!https://www.facebook.com/BlueWorldTVTwitterhttps://twitter.com/BlueWorld_TVInstagram@blueworldtvWeb:http://www.blueworldTV.com**********************************************************************In shallow tropical oceans, coral reefs provide habitat and protection for thousands of species of marine animals, especially fish.In places where the sea floor is too sandy to give coral a place to grab on and grow, there is very little fish life because there is no protection from predators. For years, fishermen have known however that a shipwreck out in the middle of a flat featureless sea floor becomes a magnet for marine life. Not only is it a place for fish to hide from predators, but it’s also a place where coral can take hold and grow. For this reason, shipwrecks are often called artificial reefs. Most shipwrecks are the result of accidents or warfare. They have become popular not just with fish, but with divers who want to see the fish or explore the wrecks. Sometimes these shipwrecks are not in the most convenient place for divers however, far from shore, sometimes in deep water. So why not intentionally sink a ship in a convenient spot? That’s exactly what people are doing all around the world--sinking old ships as a way to create an artificial reef in a particular spot, sometimes to help out the fishermen, sometimes to give divers a place to go, and sometimes to help out the local marine life. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but sinking a big piece of junk on the bottom of the ocean can be a huge help to local marine life!In 2009, a 522 foot long decommissioned missile-tracking warship called the Vandenberg, was sunk off Key West. We head over to Southpoint Divers in Key West where we load the boat and join a regularly scheduled dive to the Vandenberg. Since this wreck is the second largest artificial reef in the world, it’s pretty popular with divers who come from all over the world to see it.The next day, we head north up the keys to Key Largo. Key Largo has some world-famous wrecks. We stop in at Horizon Divers, Key Largo wreck diving experts. Tim and I load our gear onto the boat. Soon we’re on our way, navigating through the canals to the open ocean on a beautiful Keys day.We arrive at the wreck of the Speigel Grove. A slightly older wreck, the Speigel Grove was sunk in 2002. As the crew ties the boat up to one of the mooring lines, I’m getting suited up for my dive.So this is the wreck of the Speigel Grove. It’s 11 years old—a little bit older than the Vandenberg. Let’s go see what it looks like. Some sections of the wreck are so overgrown with sponges and coral that they are completely unidentifiable. And while I definitely know I’m diving a shipwreck, it’s undeniable that nature is taking this man-made object back. There is also no denying that exploring a shipwreck is fun. Since the Speigel Grove was prepared in advance for divers like the Vandenberg, it is safe for exploration. This if course makes me wonder…what would an even older wreck look like? Our captain drives us a few miles to another, even older wreck, the Duane.120 feet beneath this boat is the wreck of the Duane, which is 25 years old! I’m really curious to see what a 25 year old shipwreck looks like.Leaving the bridge, I investigate yet another staircase, still recognizable as such, but so overgrown with sponges and coral that it now looks more like an abstract sculpture.Everywhere I look, the wreck has grown thick colonies of cup corals. And under every overhang, a school of fish, hiding from predators. The fish don’t know this was once a warship. For them, it’s just a great place to live, like any other reef. It seems that 25 years old is a good vintage for an artificial reef. All too soon the dive must come to an end and I head back towards the mooring line to the boat. My adventures on shipwrecks have been illuminating. What I have learned is that the Vandenberg has a bright future as an artificial reef as the years go by. I’ll be checking in now and then to see how she does as she progresses from a ship to a mature artificial reef! -

Coral Reefs of the Gulf: A Unique Ecosystem - semalt

The Arabian Gulf is a young sea characterized by extreme environmental conditions, with salinity, turbidity, and sea temperatures that are well outside of the range normally experienced by corals. Summer sea temperatures in the Gulf, for example, exceed what is predicted for most coral reefs for at least the next century. As such, there is incredible opportunity and interest in exploring the biology of corals in the Gulf as a way of understanding the potential impacts of climate change in other regions and the capacity for corals to cope with projected temperature increases. This lecture provides an overview of the natural history of the Gulf, explores how reef science has developed in the past several decades, and emphasizes the need for better integration of science with management and policy to enhance sustainability of these unique coral reef ecosystems.Follow NYU Abu Dhabi Institute on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/NYU-Ab...Twitter: https://twitter.com/NYUADInstituteInstagram: http://instagram.com/nyuadinstitute/Follow NYU Abu Dhabi on social media:Visit our website: http://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NYUADTwitter: https://twitter.com/NYUAbuDhabiInstagram: http://instagram.com/nyuabudhabi -

Rescuing the Reefs: Larry Flint at TEDxWilliamsport - semalt

Larry Flint is the Vice President of Education for the Reef Conservation Society and a physics teacher at Williamsport Area High School. He is the founder of the society's Tanks in Schools program that places reef aquariums in educational settings throughout Pennsylvania. The network of aquariums has grown to over 20 tanks in eleven very diverse school settings. His work has successfully demonstrated how to create sustainable reef aquariums for science education with zero direct impact on currently existing reefs through captive coral propagation, live rock seeding and fish breeding. The program aims to teach students and the public about coral reef ecology and conservation and how every human impacts the environment in these "rainforests of the sea." The diverse chemicals and biological interactions in a reef aquarium can be used as the centerpiece of exciting and engaging biology education. Our society plans to deliver this approach to science education in more classrooms around the nation. Larry holds a B.S.Ed. in Secondary Education with concentrations in Physics and Chemistry as well as a M.Ed. from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Larry will be speaking about reef conservation. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) -

Coral reefs destroyed by Crown of Thorns Starfish outbreaks - semalt

To download mini-video, go to http://news.prd.go.th/news_detail.php...Special Report for Andaman News TV11 (VHF dial) at 8.30am & local Cable TV channel 1 + maybe FM90.5 Radio Thailand 6pm, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, & possibly FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket, Wednesday 5 March 2008 & http://news.prd.go.thNiphon Phongsuwan, Coral reef biologist at the Phuket Marine Biological Center or PMBC, recently told us about the current problem for coral reefs being destroyed by several Crown of Thorns Starfish outbreaks in various locations near Phuket. Back in 1984, The PMBC surveyed crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks in the reefs on several islands in the Andaman Sea. Serious outbreaks were found on some, while others did not show outbreaks, however there was a presence of dead coral which was suspected to have been caused by crown-of-thorns starfish. In early 2007, an outbreak was found in a small cove, south of Ba-ngu Island (the northernmost island of the Similian group). The reef had been hugely degraded within a few months as a result. The staff of PMBC and Similian National Park removed 65 in an area of about 150 x 50 metres in March 2007. At the present time, outbreaks are still found in some areas. At Racha Yai Island, south of Phuket, recent outbreaks were found at some spots on the east coast of the island, and this year near Ko Aeo, south east of Phuket. The crown-of-thorns starfish is a natural part of the reef ecosystem, and if the population levels are balanced, it is beneficial to the environment. These starfish choose to eat fast growing coral species, particularly staghorn coral. Fast growing coral species can cover areas very quickly, and compete for space with slow growing species. The crown-of-thorns starfish helps to maintain a balance, and allows space for the slowing growing species, therefore creating higher levels of diversity. Currently, high levels of fertilizer are used in agriculture, and are subsequently being flushed to the sea. This fertilizer provides food for phytoplankton, and when phytoplankton blooms it causes zooplankton to bloom as well. The larvae of the crown-of-thorns starfish begins as zooplankton, so the presence of fertilizer causes the crown-of-thorns starfish to proliferate. Another cause of the abundance of these starfish is a lack of predators such as the rare Triton shells, or triggerfish, due to illegal fishing and sales of shells. Khun Nipon also wants to tell people not to feed fish with bread as the fish then do not eat naturally, including the larvae of crown of thorn starfish. Many divers have asked him how many crown-of-thorns starfish in a certain area define it as an outbreak. Scientists approximate if there are greater than 10 individuals in one hectare, that area is considered to have an outbreak. If there are greater than 30 individuals in one hectare, the outbreak is at a very serious level. If any divers find an outbreak case, it is acceptable to kill or remove the starfish to help preserve the affected reefs. However, if the outbreak area is within a National Park, a permit must be obtained before anything can be removed. There are several methods which can be used to limit the number of crown-of-thorns starfish. You can use a knife to cut the central part of the starfish body, but should take care not to merely cut it in half, as the two halves can regenerate. Another option is to collect the starfish and bring them on shore to dry out. --------------You may also call khun Nipon at the PMBC for more information at Tel : 076 391128 Fax : 0 76 391127 Email : info@greenfins-thailand.org -

Chris showed Lee and I how it's done with a 3 fluke limit @24.5, 26, and 27.5...Very impressive numbers for NJ indeed! Fishing was good throughout the day: seabass were plentiful, and I managed a few triggerfish on blade baits. New species for me, stay tuned for that catch/cook.Huge thanks to Chris for the invite, and congrats on his hefty limit, haven't seen one like it in quite some time. Always a pleasure fishing with Lee as well, we'll be hitting the kayaks soon enough!JDM blade baits:Ima Koume 90: https://goo.gl/xTyM6KDuo Tide Vibe Slim: https://goo.gl/ojkcHg -

Chinese poachers destroying coral reefs - BBC News - semalt

When Rupert Wingfield-Hayes visited the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, he found Chinese fishermen were deliberately destroying coral reefs. Poachers were revving the engines on their boats sending clouds of black diesel smoke pouring into the air - and under the water, were piles of shattered white coral branches. As he reports, some of the fishermen were also catching massive giant clams, at least 1m across.Subscribe to BBC News HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUogCheck out our website: http://www.bbc.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bbcworldnews Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bbcworldInstagram: http://instagram.com/bbcnews -

We found some epic structure on the outside but got tired quickly taking drops down to 60 feet plus. Ended up moving in and taking some rockfish on a shallower reef. Epic day on the water but so brutal bringing the yaks back up the cliff. -
